In 2005, I'll listen to more MUSIC, not the droolling shit-your-own-pants drivel of Geoff LLoyd

What IS 'Music' ?
I realised that this page was mucho pretentioso. Who needs to know what some musicologist thought was musical in 1807? Just stick your radio on and listen. Live365.com and the good old BBC have hours of music waiting to be explored online. I'm listening to a bit of Gorecki right now over the Web, but I feel some Led Zeppelin coming on. And there's always Surf, and Jazz, and Gregorian Chant(!). And Reggae, and Blues and Swing and Highlife .....
Unfortunately, there is crap too. I have to listen to what is played in clubs at my  gym : crap music engineered by knobs who have learned technically how to sample and create loops on a computer. It's a shame all these 'Music Technology' courses don't teach anybody any musical taste. And rap is music for singers who can't sing.  And if you really want someone who can swear their head off into a microphone, I'm yo man, yo muthah.

What is Music?
My Definition of Music
And a few examples...

And My Definition is ....

Basically, music is subjective. Some people like the sound of a Formula 1 car: some people like the sound of seagulls. I don't listen to rap music, you might not listen to Miles Davis, music from Mali, or reggae (I feel very sorry for you). But, just because I don't like some music, and you don't like some music, doesn't mean that SOMEONE out there doesn't like it. The music that people like is the music that gives them a positive emotional charge.
So, my definition of music is :
'Any sound, or mixture of sounds and rhythms, that makes an individual feel positive emotion'.

And a few examples of real music.....

Miles Davis, Joe Satriani, Eric Clapton, Brian Wilson, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, John Scofield, lots of reggae, the Kronos Quartet, Jan Akkerman, lots more jazz, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, Paul Kossof and Frank Zappa. And there are a few ladies whose music is worth listening too as well : Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morisette, Avril Lavigne, Pink. And a few others.

And here's an update for 2005: for someone who reckons they like music so much, I didn't actually go to lots of gigs. I went to two actually: Brian Wilson in March and The Darkness in December. I got a Bug DAB radio from Herself for Christmas, and I've decided that I like listening to Radio 6, as well as Radio 3 for Late Night Junction. It's got to be better than Pete and Geoff on Virgin Radio - well,  Pete Mitchell's alright, it's just that noncey, self-opinionated little twat Geoffrey Lloyd that makes me want to rage against the universe.....So here's a New Year Resolution for 2005, and a wish : I will go to more than two music gigs this year. And I hope that Geoffrey Lloyd decides he wants to join a commune and 'find' himself for the next 10 years.
